Physics of Viscous Bridges in Soil Biological Hotspots

چکیده

Plant roots and bacteria alter the soil physical properties by releasing polymeric blends into pore space (e.g., extracellular substances mucilage). The mechanisms which these interact with matrix spatial configuration of liquid phase related hydraulic remain unclear. Here, we propose a theory to explain how polymer solutions form one-dimensional filaments two-dimensional interconnected structures spanning across multiple pores. Unlike water, primarily shaped surface tension, connected during drying due their high viscosity. integrity is explained interplay viscosity tension forces (elegantly characterized Ohnesorge number), while formation requires consideration interaction solution solid surfaces external drivers rate). During drying, increases at critical point, when friction between polymers overcomes water absorption polymers, concentration gas-liquid interface asymptotically. At this are deposited as surfaces, such hollow cylinders or surfaces. A model introduced predict structures. Viscosity solution, specific surface, rate key parameters determining transition from one-to Model results in good agreement observed formed porous media drying.

Milestones in Soil Physics

This special issue of Soil Science celebrates the enormous accomplishments made during the past century or more in the field of soil science, including some of the key articles published in Soil Science during its 90 years of existence. In this article, we focus on the contributions in soil physics, exemplified by the articles of Willard Gardner (1919) and John Philip (1957c), both of which are...

: metadiscourse in introduction sections of applied linguistics and physics research articles: exploring variation in frequency and type

abstract in written mode of language, metadiscourse markers are used commonly to help writers in general and academic writers in particular to produce coherent and professional texts. the purpose of the present study was to compare introduction sections of applied linguistics and physics articles regarding their use of interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers based on the model pro...

Soil–Foundation–Structure Interaction Effects in Seismic Behavior of Bridges

Presented here is an analysis of the effects of soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) on seismic response of highway bridges. Of particular importance is the issue of input motions, their scaling and application to the SFS models. The analysis presented in this paper addresses the influence of inelastic behavior of both the soil and the structural components during seismic response evalu...

The adenylate cyclase toxin (CyaA, 1706 residues) plays an essential role in the early stages of respiratory tract colonization by Bordetella pertussis, the causative agent of whooping cough. The cell intoxication process, which is still poorly understood, involves a unique mechanism of translocation of the CyaA catalytic domain (AC) directly across the plasma membrane of target cells. Once in ...

Near-island biological hotspots in barren ocean basins.

Phytoplankton production drives marine ecosystem trophic-structure and global fisheries yields. Phytoplankton biomass is particularly influential near coral reef islands and atolls that span the oligotrophic tropical oceans. The paradoxical enhancement in phytoplankton near an island-reef ecosystem--Island Mass Effect (IME)--was first documented 60 years ago, yet much remains unknown about the ...
